Police Department Recruitment

The Buffalo Grove Police Department offers a traditional recruitment program as well as a lateral transfer opportunity (for current sworn officers).  It is anticipated that the next entry-level police officer recruitment process will begin in the Spring of 2019.  If you would like to be notified when the next testing process is announced along with important dates and application deadlines, join our recruitment mailing list.

As an officer with the Buffalo Grove Police Department, you will be presented with challenges and opportunities unequaled in any other profession.  We strive to strive to recruit the most highly skilled, competent, dedicated, community-oriented officers possible.  Our officers pride themselves on performing their duties to the highest level of excellence.  After completing mandatory state academy training, new officers are assigned to the Patrol Division with a field training officer.  In addition to working as a patrol officer, there are several special assignments available within the department.  These opportunities include:

Traditional Recruitment



Minimum Qualifications
  • Except as otherwise provided by statute, applicants must be at least 21 and less than 35 years of age at time of application (persons 20 years of age who have successfully completed two years of law enforcement studies at an accredited college or university may apply and be considered for appointment;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Applicants must be in good physical condition and will be required to pass a fitness test, written test, an oral examination, background investigation, and a polygraph test;
  • There is no residency requirement.

Hiring Process

A completed application must be submitted to the Buffalo Grove Police Department during the open application period, which takes place every two years.  Applicants must be present for and pass the following initial phases:

  • Successful completion of the Illinois P.O.W.E.R. test
  • Written Examination
  • Oral Interview

The scores of the written test and the oral examination are computed and a preliminary eligibility register is developed.  Following the application of qualifying preference points, a final eligibility register is established.  As positions become vacant and are approved for hiring, a thorough background investigation will be conducted on candidates based on their position on the eligibility list.  Upon successful completion of the background investigation, a conditional offer of employment is made.  Successful candidates must pass comprehensive medical and psychological tests prior to appointment.  

Lateral Transfers



Minimum Qualifications
  • State of Illinois certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.  Part-time certification as a law enforcement officer does not meet this requirement;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  •  Individuals must be at least 21 years old;
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • At least 2 years of experience as a full time sworn, certified law enforcement officer with an Illinois law enforcement agency, with the last 3 years; 
  • Candidates with less than 2 years of experience may be considered if the candidate has completed 60 hours of college credit or has 2 years of active duty military experience, in addition to full time sworn certified law enforcement experience;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Must agree to comply with all requirements of the position and have the ability to pass all examination and training requirements;
  • Valid FOID card
  • Must agree to comply with all requirements of the position and have the ability to pass all examination and training requirements
  • Ability to furnish, upon request, a copy of the following: professional licenses; training certificates; documents confirming work experience, employee evaluations; and any other employment related material as requested or required. 
  • There is no residency requirement. 

Hiring Process

A completed application must be submitted to the Buffalo Grove Police Department during the open application period, which generally takes place once a year.  Each phase of the process is pass/fail and is required to proceed to the next step:
  • Pre-screening application review by Police Department Command Staff
  • Interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
  • Character/background investigation and credit check
  • Polygraph examination

In the event that pre-screening identifies applicants who have certain knowledge, skills and abilities that make those applicants more desirable for the position sought to be filled, the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners and Police Department Command Staff may interview only those applicants for consideration. Placement on the lateral entry eligibility list shall be based upon the relative excellence of applicants and a minimum passing oral interview score.
