We occasionally receive questions from citizens who have been issued a traffic citation in Cook County and want to know why they have to go to court in Lake County.
Buffalo Grove is situated in both Lake and Cook counties. Buffalo Grove is a home rule community. Under the state statute for home rule, we may prosecute local village ordinances in either the Lake County or Cook County court system.
Department policy is to currently cite all local ordinance violations into Lake County Court. The Village of Buffalo Grove has also adopted the Illinois Vehicle Code into local ordinances.
Anyone charged with a state offense (as opposed to a local ordinance violation) is assigned a court date in the county in which the alleged violation occurred.
This also pertains to those arrested for domestic violence, second-time DUI offenders, and other criminal offenses listed in the Illinois Compiled Statues.
