The Village Helping the Community Go Green
The Village of Buffalo Grove in conjunction with Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) is being used as a depository site for sharps, leftover safe prescription medicine, compact fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermometers, Brita Filters, and certain electronics that pose environmental harm.
Where to Recycle
All items mentioned below can be dropped off:
Monday - 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday - 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At: Village Hall
50 Raupp Blvd.
Buffalo Grove, IL 60089
Safe Sharp Disposal
This program will allow residents who self-inject medications the option of bringing their used sharps to the Village of Buffalo Grove for proper disposal and help to prevent the sharps from entering the household waste system.
Not properly disposed of, used sharps could cause harm to sanitation workers who must handle the discarded sharps.
The Buffalo Grove Health Department will be providing free sharps containers to residents interested in participating in this program.
Sharps users will then be able to take their full sharps container to the Buffalo Grove Health Department for appropriate disposal.
Please note that all sharps must be in an approved sharps container.
Safe Prescription Disposal
This program helps ensure the environmentally safe disposal of unused safe prescription drugs. This program is for residentially generated unused prescriptions and expired over-the-counter drugs.
Prescription drugs that are more than a year old should be disposed of as well as nonprescription medications without an expiration date that are more than six months old.
Keep all pharmaceuticals in their original containers with labels to identify the contents.
Brita Filter Disposal
The Village has a new green initiative to allow residents to deposit used Brita filters at Village Hall.
According to Brita’s website, filters are a 100% recyclable and Village Hall is now a place where they can be deposited.
After enough filters are collected, they will be shipped to Take Back the Filter Campaign.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Disposal
The CFL recycling program was designed to help ensure the environmentally safe recycling of these bulbs.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends the use of CFLs in order to minimize energy use and help provide for a cleaner environment.
Each CFL contains a small amount (5 mg) of mercury.
The goal of the program is to remove this potential mercury contamination from the waste stream.
The Thermometer Recycling Program can help to promote the environmentally safe recycling of these mercury containing products and to remove this potential mercury contamination from the waste stream.
Bring in your mercury containing thermometers, thermostats and wall switches.
This program is designed to manage obsolete or unneeded electronics in the community. Discarded electronic equipment contains harmful toxins which, when released in to the environment can contaminate water, land and air. The Village of Buffalo Grove looks to make recycling your electronics a simple process.
The Village of Buffalo Grove in conjunction with Recycling Avenue is collecting cell phones, DVDs, game consoles, MP3 Players, Print Cartridges, Digital Cameras, Digital Video Recorders and Laptops/Notebooks.
Computer monitors, printers, personal computers, toner cartridges will not be accepted.
