Operation Identification

What is Operation Identification?
Operation Identification is nationally recognized by Law Enforcement as a citizen’s burglary prevention program.

The Operation ID program involves marking or engraving personal or business property with an identifying number such as your Illinois Drivers License or State ID Card number.

The Operation ID program allows law enforcement to detect, identify, and return stolen or lost property to its rightful owner.

Operation ID is a three step program
  1. Engrave your property or valuables with an identifying mark, preferably your Drivers License number followed by your state abbreviation. An example would be (Z000-0000-0000 IL).
  2. Inventory your marked property on a form with descriptions including brand, model number, serial number, color and size. Keep this inventory in a safe place.
  3. Display the Operation ID decal on your front and rear window or door, showing you are a participant in this program.
How do I participate?
The Buffalo Grove Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit has engravers that can be loaned out to residents and business owners.

Please contact a member of the Crime Prevention Unit to obtain the engraver and an Operation ID packet which contains everything you will need.
