Rental Property Licensing Program


Effective January 1, 2013, the Village of Buffalo Grove began the Residential Rental Housing Program to provide for the annual registration and inspections of all rental properties within the village. See Ordinance 2012-050.

On October 17, 2016, the Village Board passed Ordinance 2016-047 amending the program by eliminating the Temporary Certificate and requiring that the annual inspection is performed within the first 3 months of the License year.
 

Purpose of the Program


The program is established to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people in the community. It also seeks to:
  • Ensure that all rental units comply with the minimum housing standards regulated by village ordinances;
  •  Protect the character and stability of residential areas;
  •  Correct and prevent housing conditions that adversely affect or are likely to affect the life, safety, general welfare and health, including physical, mental and social well being of person occupying rental units; and
  •  Preserve the value of land and buildings throughout the village.

This program includes, but is not limited to:
  • Apartment complexes
  • Coach homes
  • Condominiums
  • Duplexes
  • Row homes
  • Single family homes
  • Town homes

The annual application fee, which must accompany the completed application, is $75 for a single family home, including but not limited to:
  • Condominium
  • Row home
  • Town home

The annual fee includes the initial inspection and one re-inspection (if applicable). Subsequent inspection fees are $50 per inspection.
