Change your clock - Change your battery
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department encourages citizens to use the two annual clock shifts as reminders to replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, particularly in autumn, just before the heating and candle season causes an increase in home fires. Similar twice-yearly tasks include reviewing and practicing fire escape and family disaster plans, inspecting vehicle lights, checking storage areas for hazardous materials, and the important task of reminding the children to be careful now that darkness comes earlier.
In 2008, daylight time begins on March 9 and ends on November 2.
Halloween falls on a Friday this year, the motoring public needs to take extra precaution while driving. Trick or Treaters will be excited and have the reputation for running from house to house as well as across roads and streets, slow down and keep a watchful eye out.
Planning ahead can help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Taking simple fire safety precautions, like making sure fabrics for costumes and decorative materials are flame-resistant can prevent fires. Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or flame-retardant. When creating a costume, choose material that won't easily ignite if it comes in contact with heat or flame. Avoid billowing or long trailing features.
Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting or as part of their costume.
Instruct children to stay away from open flames or other heat sources and be sure children know how to stop, drop and roll in the event their clothing catches fire. Stop immediately, drop to the ground, covering your face with your hands, and roll over and over to extinguish flames.
