Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band was started in October 2001 by the Village of Buffalo Grove Arts Commission and Howard Green, Music Director and Conductor. The Band's next performance will be their 12th Annual Spring Concert on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 7:00 pm at Stevenson High School, where the theme will be "Isn't It Romantic II".
The Band is comprised of 70 adult musicians aged 18 and above and is open without fee or audition to anyone who plays a wind or percussion instrument.
While all instrumentalists are welcome without audition, there are particular openings available for Clarinet and French Horn. If you are interested in becoming a member, please read more about Joining the Band.
About the Band
The Band is the first and only adult community instrumental group in the Village. It is an integral part of Buffalo Grove's extensive promotion of the arts, along with other non-instrumental music groups, drama productions, and arts events that occur regularly throughout the year. In its 10-year history it has grown into one of the premiere community bands in northern Illinois.
The Band provides exposure to music of all styles. Through performances in surrounding communities, the Band acts as a good-will ambassador for the arts on behalf of the Village. In past years the Band has played twice at Cantigny Park and was honored to perform multiple times at the prestigious Wheaton Band Festival.
In addition to the Symphonic Band, its core ensemble, the Band has branched out into small ensembles that perform in an annual Ensemble Recital as well as independent venues throughout the year and a full Jazz Band that performs jazz classics by Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson and others.
Music Varieties and Performances
The BGSB plays and performs all varieties of music from classical to Broadway to pop and jazz.
In the last ten years, the Band has performed over 110 concerts to capacity audiences, including formal concerts each year at Stevenson and Buffalo Grove High Schools, as well as holiday concerts at local churches over the Christmas holidays and summer concerts, including Buffalo Grove Days, Willow Stream Park, and the Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival. Their annual Independence Day Concert at the Buffalo Grove Rotary Green has become a yearly tradition that brings over 3000 people to hear the performance two hours before the start of the Village’s fireworks display.
The group is a member of the National Association of Concert Bands and is a non-profit organization entirely financed through private and corporate sponsorships, charitable donations, and ticket sales from its two yearly formal concerts. In past years the BGSB has been honored several times as a recipient of a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
