Minimum QualificationsExcept as otherwise provided by statute, applicants must be at least 21 and less than 35 years of age at time of application (persons 20 years of age who have successfully completed two years of law enforcement studies at an accredited college or university may apply and be considered for appointment:

  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Applicants must be in good physical condition and will be required to pass a fitness test, written test, an oral examination,  background investigation, and a polygraph test;
  • There is no residency requirement.

Hiring ProcessA completed application must be submitted to the Buffalo Grove Police Department during the open application period, which takes place every two years.  Applicants must be present for and pass the following initial phases:

  • Successful completion of the Illinois P.O.W.E.R. test
  • Written Examination
  • Oral Interview

The scores of the written test and the oral examination are computed and a preliminary eligibility register is developed.  Following the application of qualifying preference points, a final eligibility register is established.  As positions become vacant and are approved for hiring, a thorough background investigation will be conducted on candidates based on their position on the eligibility list.  Upon successful completion of the background investigation, a conditional offer of employment is made.  Successful candidates must pass comprehensive medical and psychological tests prior to appointment.
